Crime Drama- Based around a group or individual trying to solve a crime, usually a murder, robbery or kidnap. The group solving the crime find the criminal by the end of the film. The plots usually have suspense, mystery, red herring or personal drama; Having suspense leads towards a thriller however, the crime aspect still occurs but it is whether the criminal is caught in time or will they escape. Using a mystery the audience do not know certain parts of the puzzle e.g. Why the person was murdered or how the robbery took place. A red herring will trick audiences such as killing the wrong person, or the information given is wrong. Including a personal drama such as a family death or a divorce can lead to a slump in performance.
Criminal- The person or group who commit the crime and are under investigation.

Victims- The centre of the first scene, the crime has happen to this character whether they are murdered , mugged or set up.

The ones who solve the crime- The centre of the whole film, who discover who committed the crime. for example police, detectives, special agents etc.
Usually set in a city seen as a dangerous place, also includes courts, police stations and also streets. Effective in large non-fiction cities e.g. Miami, Manchester etc. The crime drama can be more realistic due to the description of location, noise and characters.
There are 5 stages in Torodovs narrative theory for all films:
- Equilibrium
- Disruption
- Recognition
- Attempt to repair
- Resolution
