He explains to the detectives that the murders are all linked to one man, the Mayor of the town. He tells them when he confronted the Mayor about this last year, he threatened him with arrest for harassment, but as he left he uttered the same ritual words the murderer in 02 had said. Research on the Mayor leads them to finding out he has a son who doesn't actually exist on legal documents. Jake believes this son has been carrying out the murders of people all linked to the Mayor. Research in to simular films.

Research in to Similar Films.
In this document I am going to review and research similar films in our crime drama genre; the 3 different films I am going to look at  are: 'Clockwork Orange,' 'Kingsman' and 'The Silence of the Lambs.' All of these 3 films are all crime drama's but with different levels of depth, 'Kingsman' being light hearted whilst 'Silence of the lambs' is really in depth and sickening to watch.

Clockwork Orange, a controversial film, released in 1971 is not so much drama but very 'crime.' After losing legal battles, Kubrick (the director of the film), was forced to withdraw the film in 1993, however after his death in 1999 the film got re-released in cinemas. The film was withdrawn becaused it influenced the public in to doing infomous crimes, and in court the name of the film 'Clockwork Orange' got brought up many times.
The plot of the film is based in futuristic England where Alex, the leader of the group, and 3 of his "Droogs"commit in his own terms "Ultraviolence," where defenceless people are the aim of the group. This film tends to use a lot of music, most being fast tempo, classical music when the 'gang' is committing a crime. This film links to a crime drama genre, initially because of  the use of the music chosen.

The second film I am going to give an overview of is a recent arrival, 'Kingsman.' Released in 2014, 'Kingsman' is a comedic crime drama which earned a gross profit of $412.4 million. Unlike clockwork orange, this film is uncontroversial and has a much larger target audience, not only because of its well thought out plot, but also the use of well known actors such as: Samuel L Jackson, Taron Egerton and Colin Firth.
The plot of this film is all about "Eggsy,"(the protagonist) and his rise to become a great secret service agent; he goes through tough training -which he got kicked out of- to eventually save the world off of his own back. As it was a successful film a sequel has been announced and is to come out June 2017. This film links to a crime dra because of the plot, and how the main character 'defeats' the villian.

Finally, 'Silence of the Lambs,' published in 1991, based off a book with the same name, again, is a crime drama genre. Winning best picture in 1991, 'Sinece of the Lambs' also created Oscar winners in the actors: Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster which were reported as"greatest performances ever seen on screen."
The plot of this film is about a young FBI cadet that has to find a missing women whom is in the presence of a pyschopathic serial killer, who shreds the skins of his victims. To find the psychopath, the FBI cadet then goes to another pychopathic killer, in Hannibal lector, to get an insight of what psychopaths may do, and where the women is. This film links to a crime drama because of the characters.
eing the same sub-genre, all the characters in this film is somewhat the same or simular to our film.

In conclusion, all crime drama's have one main different attribute, whether being conroversial (Clockwork Orange), having a comedy aspect to it (Kingsman) or finally having a sickening topic (Silence of the Lambs).

Possible Film Distributor: Fox.

A Possible Distributor for our Film

A film distributor is a company responsible for the marketing of a film; this is very different from a production company, which our group will take the role of (creating the film). Distribution is key to a film as with out marketing nobody will know, for example, when the film will be released. Taking charge of releasing the film in to cinemas and on to DVD's, distributors are incredibly important in the whole process from creating the film to people viewing the film.

Fox:
20th century fox (2009).jpg
For a possible distributor for our film I have gone with 20th Century Fox, a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox. The film company not only produces fims but they distribute them too; examples of them distrubuting crime drama films are: Percy Jackson, Fight Club, Die Hard, Die Hard 2 and Taken.

There are many reasons for choosing 20th Century Fox:

1). They have a good reputation with high standards.

2). Being a large American company they have a large budget, meaning they will be able to have a large marketing campaign to publicise our film and get it well known

3). Fox have many subsidiaries, but a main one which I have looked in to, that would be beneficial for our film is 'Fox Searchlight pictures.'
Fox Searchlight Pictures.PNG- Searchlight is an American film distrubutor from Fox. Unlike 20th Century Fox it does not produce films, it simply distributes them. The positive of Searchlight is that it distributes UK independent films; where they tend to distribute horror and 'dramedy' which is our genre. They have distributed well known films, from a relatively small budget, some of these films are: 'The Full Monty', 'Never Die Alone', 'Shame' and multi-award winning '12 Years of Slave.'

Research in to Crime-Drama

Research in to Genre

Crime Drama:

In a crime drama there's always a plot which causes distress to a character. Likewise, every film in this genre contains an authoritative figure, whether a police man or detective. Plot twists are key in a crime drama, they draw the viewer in and makes the consumer of the film want to watch on. Not only are the script and actors key, but the effects made in the post production of the film are vital! This is where melodramatic music is created to show the scared emotion of the characters (tending to use deep, low key classical music); dark filters are put on shots to enhance the morbidity of the scene and special effects, such as blood, are used to make each shot seem even more gruesome. A lot of focus in these types of films are on the weapon, whether it be a gun or teddy bear, they do take up a lot of air time; this would be because the viewer would want to know all details about how the victim died, and how the villian caried out the attack.

There are three types of main characters in a crime drama:
  • A hero cop/police man. The whole film can be wholey dedicated to following this character around and seeing how they solve a mystery.
  • In contrast, a film can be dedicated to a villian or anti-hero. This is the person whom causes distress, they are usually bad tempered.
  • A final type of character in a crime drama is the victim. Usually innocent, the victim(s) can either be a group of people of just a singular person, only to be seem on screen for a matter of minutes; but without the victims the film wouldn't work.

Image result for inspector morse locationIn conclusion, a crime drama is a genre that does not have a 'happy' feel to it, they are usually set in large, well known locations with heritage (such as Inspector Morse, in Oxford) to give it an 'old fashioned look.'
