TREATMENTS

Duration
The duration of our film in its full length would be around 100 minutes (1 hour + 40 mins)

Audience
Due to the graphic images featured throughout the storyline and dark undertones our film is only suitable for a mature audience

Certification
Again, due to the dark nature of the film, the certification  would be an 18

Distributor
A suitable distributor for our film I have found is Gramercy Pictures. They have been the distributors of well known crime films such as Fargo, The Big Lebowski and The Usual Suspects.
Story
1999
Jake Lestrade has just received a promotion after cracking a year long narcotics case which featured multiple murders. He is then assigned the murder case of an exchange student where a satanic marking was found at the scene, linking to other several other murders and possibly linking to some missing persons cases. Forensics bring nothing back from the scene which leaves Jake stumped as he continues to question people.

2002
Media pressure to find the killer intensifies as another body is found as well as more reports of missing persons cases continue to surface, and every suspect Jake has pursued has resulted in a dead-end. He visits the ex-boyfriend of the latest known victim, Sara,  to inform him of what has happened and possibly discover any info on the victim. He reveals that he had an altercation with a man in a pub who was antagonising him about Sara, saying she was now in love with him. The ex-boyfriend says the man come across as mentally deranged, and that he spoke about his love for death, before leaving in red van with distinctive markings written over it. Jake puts out an A.P.B. on the van, and it is spotted 2 weeks later driving it some woods. Jake follows the road where the van went, where he comes across a man carrying a knife with blood stains on his shirt. He arrests the man, who taunts him about the murders. Jake stumbles across the body of another girl and, enraged, shoots the murderer in the back of the head just as back up arrives. Jake escapes a murder sentence but is instead fired by his superiors.

2015
Jake, now an alcoholic waster, is being interviewed by two relatively inexperienced detectives, regarding the events he witnessed. He details the what he came across, with the detectives then presenting him with a case file, a murder the exact copy the ones he investigated, suggesting the man he got did not work alone. The detectives ask more questions, and Jake gives them every detail in his recollection, and he agrees to help them in their investigation. He takes them to his storage unit, where he had amassed a wide collection of evidence of the years of all the murders and missing persons cases he feels are linked. He explains to the detectives that the murders are all linked to one man, the Mayor of the town. He tells them when he confronted the Mayor about this last year, he threatened him with arrest for harassment, but as he left he uttered the same ritual words the murderer in 02 had said. Research on the Mayor leads them to finding out he has a son who doesn't actually exist on legal documents. Jake believes this son has been carrying out the murders of people all linked to the Mayor. They get address for the man, who's unassuming wife answers the door. When one of the detectives becomes more forceful, insisting they ask her some questions she shoots him in the face. The other detective busts through the door and arrests her, whilst Jake runs after the man who appeared after the gunshot was heard. Jake follows him into a dark warehouse, where is taunted about the murders. The murderer stabs Jake, and he falls to the floor. Just as the murderer finishes his taunting and prepares to kill Jake, the remaining detective arrives and shoots him, The signs of sirens are heard as Jake slips unconscious.

Treatment (2 mins)

Calling Card

The duration of this piece is 2 minutes.
The audience for this film would be 18-40 years old, the interests would be based around solving crimes and criminal activity.
The age certificate for this film would be an 18, this is because of strong language use of weapons and the gore of a body on screen.
The distributor for this film would be Warner Brothers, based on previous films with similar genres to the film e.g. The Dark Knight and Prisoners. These films included detectives, victims and the criminal.
1999- Jake recieves a promotion after a year long case and thyen asigned to the murder case to a student which is linked to other murder cases thought to have satanic implications with no evidence he stuck on the case for 2 years.
2002- He gets a tip off of an old friend which leads him to finding a suspect out in the woods where he finds a man carrying a knife and arrests him after handcuffing him he finds the body of a girl and with frustration kills the man just as back up arrives he escapes a murder sentence but is fired.
2015- Jake recounts the case he was on to two detectives who have to present him with a case file of a murder of which is a replica of his previous case.

Elements which makes it unique, the use of non linear storyline with what happens to the protagonist in the opening. In our film there is a man suffering with alcoholism, it is not a representation of ordinary people, the character is going through a rough period.

Crime-Drama

Films dealing with crime and its detection are often based on plays rather than novels. In a courtroom drama, a charge is brought against one of the main characters, who says that they are innocent. Another major part is played by the lawyer (in England a barrister) representing the defendant in court and battling with the public prosecutor. He or she may enlist the services of a private investigator to find out what really happened and who the real perpetrator is. However, in most cases it is not clear at all whether the accused is guilty of the crime or not thus creating suspense.

A great crime drama follows Todorov's narrative theory

  1. Equilibrum
  2. Disruption
  3. Realisation
  4. Attempt to repair the damage of the disruption
  5. New Equilibrium

The themes of crime-dramas tend to be realistic, complex and sensitive

the majority of crime-dramas include these types of characters:
  • Criminal
  • Detective(s)
  • Police
  • Victim(s)
  • Witness(s)
Crime-Drama's split into sub-genres, such as:
  • Spy
  • Murder
  • Detective

Reviews of similar films

Research into similar films
The Untouchables (1987)
The Untouchables is a crime drama set in the prohibition era in 1920s America. Agent Eliot Ness is a detective that aims to take down gangster Al Capone. Beside the main story Eliot Ness has another story of protecting his family from the gang due to him investigating Al Capone. The main story line is catching Al Capone for tax evasion, Ness and his assembled team try to stop Capone, with also claims of bringing alcohol into the US.

Review:
Superb performances, exquisite direction and that Ennio Morricone score create an authentic 1920s Chicago feel and a hugely entertaining crime drama.

The Dark Knight (2008)
The Dark Knight is regarded as a crime drama, with a dectective as Batman, a criminal as the Joker and the victims of Gotham City. The film also has a personal drama alongside the main story, in this film Bruce Wayne has the aim of stopping being batman to be with a woman.

Review:
The plot involves nothing more or less than the Joker’s attempts to humiliate the forces for good and expose Batman’ secret identity, showing him to be a poser and a fraud. He includes Gordon and Dent on his target list, and contrives cruel tricks to play with the fact that Bruce Wayne once loved, and Harvey Dent now loves, Assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes . The tricks are more cruel than he realizes, because the Joker doesn’t know Batman’s identity. Heath Ledger has a good deal of dialogue in the movie, and a lot of it isn’t the usual jabs and jests we’re familiar with: It’s psychologically more complex, outlining the dilemmas he has constructed, and explaining his reasons for them.

Research into distribution: Universal

Universal

I suggest that we use Universal Studios to distribute our film as they have a record of producing successful films in similar genres as the one our film we be such as:

  • American Gangster
  • Alpha Dog
  • Miami Vice
  • Inside Man
  • The Black Dahila
  • Scarface
Universal Studios was founded by Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane, and Jules Brulatour. Laemmle watching a box office for hours, counting patrons and calculating the day's takings. Within weeks of his Chicago trip, Laemmle gave up dry goods to buy the first several nickelodeons. For Laemmle and other such entrepreneurs, the creation in 1908 of the Edison-backed Motion Picture Trust meant that exhibitors were expected to pay fees for Trust-produced films they showed. Based on the Latham Loop used in cameras and projectors, along with other patents, the Trust collected fees on all aspects of movie production and exhibition, and attempted to enforce a monopoly on distribution.

Resons to choose Universal:

  • They come with a premade reputation
  • Can offer a large budget ( for cast, crew and effects)
  • Will attract a larger audience

Research into distribution (Warner Bros)

Resarch into Distributor (Warner Bros)

To distribute our film I would suggest Warner Brothers Pictures. This is because of the previous crime dramas distributed by Warner Brothers, these include Goodfellas, mystic river and the departed.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/89/Warner_Bros._Pictures_logo.svg/1080px-Warner_Bros._Pictures_logo.svg.png              Warner Brothers pictures started with 4 brothers saving a building that was about to be demolished, here the brothers set up there first film and was their first distribution in 1903 however the brothers continued to produce films untill they introduced more distribution by founding Warner Brothers Pictures in 1923.
Film distribution is making a film available for audiences, and how audiences see it such as online viewing, cinema screenings or subscription TV. This also is important after cinema releases because of DVD, blu-ray releases.

The reasons for choosing Warner Bros:
    http://losttrack.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/the_dark_knight1.jpg
  1. The reputation of a large company
  2. Larger budget for cast, crew and equipment in locations.
  3. Attracts larger audiences
  4.  The company focuses on production and distribution, as the top grossing film produced and distributed by Warner brothers pictures was The Dark Knight (2008), which made over half a million dollars.

Age Rating

Rating

18 - Not suitable for people under the age of 18
18 rated films contain:

  • very strong violence
  •   frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language (e.g. ‘c***’)
  •   strong portrayals of sexual activity
  •   scenes of sexual violence
  •   strong horror
  •   strong blood and gore
  •   real sex (in some circumstances)
  •   discriminatory language and behaviour
Our film would possibly be rated an 18 because it will include "frequent strong langue and violence", will feature images of strong "strong blood and gore", the film will contain "implied vioelnce of sexuial nature" and "strong discriminatory language"

Our film could contain these aspects as it is a crime drama and a big influence on the film is the murder of victim and will show lots of blood as it will allow the audience to connote that a character has been murdered.

Research into genre

Crime Drama- Based around a group or individual trying to solve a crime, usually a murder, robbery or kidnap. The group solving the crime find the criminal by the end of the film. The plots usually have suspense, mystery, red herring or personal drama; Having suspense leads towards a thriller however, the crime aspect still occurs but it is whether the criminal is caught in time or will they escape. Using a mystery the audience do not know certain parts of the puzzle e.g. Why the person was murdered or how the robbery took place. A red herring will trick audiences such as killing the wrong person, or the information given is wrong. Including a personal drama such as a family death or a divorce can lead to a slump in performance.

Scarface American Crime Drama Movie Fabric Poster 36x24"/20x13" Print 06(China (Mainland))There are three types of character in a crime drama:
Criminal- The person or group who commit the crime and are under investigation.

Victims- The centre of the first scene, the crime has happen to this character whether they are murdered , mugged or set up.

The ones who solve the crime- The centre of the whole film, who discover who committed the crime. for example police, detectives, special agents etc.
Usually set in a city seen as a dangerous place, also includes courts, police stations and also streets. Effective in large non-fiction cities e.g. Miami, Manchester etc. The crime drama can be more realistic due to the description of location, noise and characters.

There are 5 stages in Torodovs narrative theory for all films:
  • Equilibrium
  • Disruption
  • Recognition
  • Attempt to repair
  • Resolution

Research in to simular films.

Research in to Similar Films.
In this document I am going to review and research similar films in our crime drama genre; the 3 different films I am going to look at  are: 'Clockwork Orange,' 'Kingsman' and 'The Silence of the Lambs.' All of these 3 films are all crime drama's but with different levels of depth, 'Kingsman' being light hearted whilst 'Silence of the lambs' is really in depth and sickening to watch.

Clockwork Orange, a controversial film, released in 1971 is not so much drama but very 'crime.' After losing legal battles, Kubrick (the director of the film), was forced to withdraw the film in 1993, however after his death in 1999 the film got re-released in cinemas. The film was withdrawn becaused it influenced the public in to doing infomous crimes, and in court the name of the film 'Clockwork Orange' got brought up many times.
The plot of the film is based in futuristic England where Alex, the leader of the group, and 3 of his "Droogs"commit in his own terms "Ultraviolence," where defenceless people are the aim of the group. This film tends to use a lot of music, most being fast tempo, classical music when the 'gang' is committing a crime. This film links to a crime drama genre, initially because of  the use of the music chosen.

The second film I am going to give an overview of is a recent arrival, 'Kingsman.' Released in 2014, 'Kingsman' is a comedic crime drama which earned a gross profit of $412.4 million. Unlike clockwork orange, this film is uncontroversial and has a much larger target audience, not only because of its well thought out plot, but also the use of well known actors such as: Samuel L Jackson, Taron Egerton and Colin Firth.
The plot of this film is all about "Eggsy,"(the protagonist) and his rise to become a great secret service agent; he goes through tough training -which he got kicked out of- to eventually save the world off of his own back. As it was a successful film a sequel has been announced and is to come out June 2017. This film links to a crime dra because of the plot, and how the main character 'defeats' the villian.

Finally, 'Silence of the Lambs,' published in 1991, based off a book with the same name, again, is a crime drama genre. Winning best picture in 1991, 'Sinece of the Lambs' also created Oscar winners in the actors: Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster which were reported as"greatest performances ever seen on screen."
The plot of this film is about a young FBI cadet that has to find a missing women whom is in the presence of a pyschopathic serial killer, who shreds the skins of his victims. To find the psychopath, the FBI cadet then goes to another pychopathic killer, in Hannibal lector, to get an insight of what psychopaths may do, and where the women is. This film links to a crime drama because of the characters.
eing the same sub-genre, all the characters in this film is somewhat the same or simular to our film.

In conclusion, all crime drama's have one main different attribute, whether being conroversial (Clockwork Orange), having a comedy aspect to it (Kingsman) or finally having a sickening topic (Silence of the Lambs).

Possible Film Distributor: Fox.

A Possible Distributor for our Film

A film distributor is a company responsible for the marketing of a film; this is very different from a production company, which our group will take the role of (creating the film). Distribution is key to a film as with out marketing nobody will know, for example, when the film will be released. Taking charge of releasing the film in to cinemas and on to DVD's, distributors are incredibly important in the whole process from creating the film to people viewing the film.

Fox:
20th century fox (2009).jpg
For a possible distributor for our film I have gone with 20th Century Fox, a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox. The film company not only produces fims but they distribute them too; examples of them distrubuting crime drama films are: Percy Jackson, Fight Club, Die Hard, Die Hard 2 and Taken.

There are many reasons for choosing 20th Century Fox:

1). They have a good reputation with high standards.

2). Being a large American company they have a large budget, meaning they will be able to have a large marketing campaign to publicise our film and get it well known

3). Fox have many subsidiaries, but a main one which I have looked in to, that would be beneficial for our film is 'Fox Searchlight pictures.'
Fox Searchlight Pictures.PNG- Searchlight is an American film distrubutor from Fox. Unlike 20th Century Fox it does not produce films, it simply distributes them. The positive of Searchlight is that it distributes UK independent films; where they tend to distribute horror and 'dramedy' which is our genre. They have distributed well known films, from a relatively small budget, some of these films are: 'The Full Monty', 'Never Die Alone', 'Shame' and multi-award winning '12 Years of Slave.'

Research in to Crime-Drama

Research in to Genre

Crime Drama:

In a crime drama there's always a plot which causes distress to a character. Likewise, every film in this genre contains an authoritative figure, whether a police man or detective. Plot twists are key in a crime drama, they draw the viewer in and makes the consumer of the film want to watch on. Not only are the script and actors key, but the effects made in the post production of the film are vital! This is where melodramatic music is created to show the scared emotion of the characters (tending to use deep, low key classical music); dark filters are put on shots to enhance the morbidity of the scene and special effects, such as blood, are used to make each shot seem even more gruesome. A lot of focus in these types of films are on the weapon, whether it be a gun or teddy bear, they do take up a lot of air time; this would be because the viewer would want to know all details about how the victim died, and how the villian caried out the attack.

There are three types of main characters in a crime drama:
  • A hero cop/police man. The whole film can be wholey dedicated to following this character around and seeing how they solve a mystery.
  • In contrast, a film can be dedicated to a villian or anti-hero. This is the person whom causes distress, they are usually bad tempered.
  • A final type of character in a crime drama is the victim. Usually innocent, the victim(s) can either be a group of people of just a singular person, only to be seem on screen for a matter of minutes; but without the victims the film wouldn't work.

Image result for inspector morse locationIn conclusion, a crime drama is a genre that does not have a 'happy' feel to it, they are usually set in large, well known locations with heritage (such as Inspector Morse, in Oxford) to give it an 'old fashioned look.'
